Zonal Modes of Cosmic Microwave Background Temperature Maps

چکیده
All-sky maps of the cosmic microwave background temperature fluctuations are usually represented by a spherical harmonic decomposition involving modes labelled by their degree l and order m (where −l 6 m 6 +l). The zonal modes (i.e those with m = 0) are of particular interest because they vary only with galactic latitude; any anomalous behaviour in them might therefore be an indication of erroneous foreground substraction. We perform a simple statistical analysis of the modes with low l for sky maps derived via different cleaning procedures from the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and show that the zonal modes provide a useful diagnostic of possible systematics.

Statistical and systematical errors in cosmic microwave background maps
Sky temperature map of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) is one of the premier probes of cosmology. To minimize instrumentally induced systematic errors, CMB anisotropy experiments measure temperature differences across the sky using paires of horn antennas with a fixed separation angle, temperature maps are recovered from temperature differences obtained in sky survey through a map-making ...
متن کاملLarge-Angle Anomalies in the CMB
We review the recently found large-scale anomalies in the maps of temperature anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background. These include alignments of the largest modes of CMB anisotropy with each other and with geometry and direction of motion of the solar ssystem, and the unusually low power at these largest scales. We discuss these findings in relation to expectation from standard inflat...
متن کاملMass Reconstruction with Cmb Polarization
Weak gravitational lensing by the intervening large-scale structure of the Universe induces high-order correlations in the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization fields. We construct minimum variance estimators of the intervening mass distribution out of the six quadratic combinations of the temperature and polarization fields. Polarization begins to assist in the recons...
متن کاملTesting the Gaussian Random Hypothesis with the Cosmic Microwave Background Temperature Anisotropies in the 3-year Wmap Data
We test the hypothesis that the temperature of the cosmic microwave background is consistent with a Gaussian random field defined on the celestial sphere, using de-biased internal linear combination (DILC) map produced from the 3-year WMAP data. We test the phases for spherical harmonic modes with l ≤ 10 (which should be the cleanest) for their uniformity, randomness, and correlation with those...

We test the hypothesis that the temperature of the cosmicmicrowave background is consistent with a Gaussian random field defined on the celestial sphere, using the full sky debiased internal linear combination (DILC) map produced from the three-yearWMAP data. We test the phases for spherical harmonic modes with ‘ 10 (which should be the cleanest) for uniformity, randomness, and correlation with...
